Plugging into Clean, Renewable Energy
Clean energy technologies like wind and solar power are up and running. They make power without damaging the air, the water, and the wilderness. By harnessing the energy that occurs naturally all around us, we won't have to build more high-pollution fossil fuel power plants. Making energy without polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink - now that's evolution.
Renewable energy also generates opportunity. A clean energy economy would create 3.3 million new American jobs, bring income to rural communities, and put the US where it belongs-at the forefront of the alternative energy industry.
1. Harnessing the Wind
Modern wind turbines use state of the art aerospace technology to turn wind into electricity. Just one turbine can produce enough power for 500 homes. To capture the full force of the wind, they stand as tall as 300 feet and constantly adjust the angle of their blades.
2. Gathering the Sun
The sun is the ultimate source of power. Every watt of energy stored in the earth's reserves of coal, oil, and natural gas is equal to just 20 days of sunshine. Everyplace you see sunlight is an opportunity to use solar energy. While some places are sunnier than others, most areas receive enough sunshine to make solar energy a powerful source of clean and affordable electricity year-round.
3. Geothermal Energy
The Earth's core is like an inner sun, warming water and rocks that lie beneath the earth's surface. This steaming water and rock can be used to generate heat and electricity. The uppermost six miles of the Earth's crust contains more energy than all the oil and gas reserves in the world. Geothermal energy is abundant, affordable, and available 24/7.
